CERN extends global research collaboration with Gigabit Ethernet services from Reliance Globalcom

Reliance Globalcom facilitates real-time, high-bandwidth data exchange between Europe and India for the pre-eminent international research institution - CERN

Mumbai - November 16, 2010 - Reliance Globalcom, a leading global provider of managed network and application delivery services for multinational enterprises, carriers and service providers, today announced that it has been awarded a one-year contract extension by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research – to provide Gigabit Ethernet connectivity between CERN’s research centre in Europe and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai, India.

Uninterrupted access over a private, controlled and reliable network were key decision criteria cited by CERN for renewing its agreement with Reliance Globalcom. The Ethernet over MPLS solution with complete end-to-end connectivity, allows CERN’s Indian data centre partner, TIFR, near-instant access to the vast volumes of data generated by CERN’s particle experiments program in Geneva, Switzerland, in addition to offering maximum flexibility to accommodate their sporadic traffic spikes, going up to as high as 1 Gigabit.

Rapid distribution of information, technology transfer, education and training for research workers forms a crucial part of CERN’s mission to collaborative research. With a large number of scientists using CERN’s facilities, the speed, security and reliability of the connection becomes critical. By providing a fully reliable, highest uptime, negligible packet loss and latency network, Reliance Globalcom enables CERN to share their real-time, mission critical experiments with thousands of interested academics instantly, breaking down the traditional geographical and security barriers to global collaborative research and speeding up the deployment of research that will positively impact the world around.

The Global Ethernet Plus service from Reliance Globalcom extends the benefits of the Ethernet technology to the global network scale helping organisations to create a single next generation, multi-service network which can transport voice, video and data traffic reliably and economically. Under the new agreement Reliance Globalcom provides secure connectivity over an MPLS backbone that brings in enhanced prioritisation capabilities enabling CERN to use the full port speed with stringent service level agreements.

David Foster, IT Deputy Department Head at CERN said, “This is an important milestone showing how large-scale scientific projects like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), at CERN, unify communities worldwide. The nature of our network traffic is unpredictable with a different range of experiments that may operate at different times or concurrently, creating a need for a reliable network platform with strong burst capabilities. Reliance Globalcom provides us with the network resilience and continuity that we require, enabling the TIFR to collaborate as part of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG). This grid involves over 150 institutes around the globe in the storage and analysis of petabytes of scientific data.”

Punit Garg, President and CEO, Reliance Globalcom said, "CERN is the world’s largest and the most respected organisation for scientific research. In this environment enormous data volumes and zero-fault tolerance is highly critical, and our ongoing relationship with CERN is testament to the reliability and security of Reliance Globalcom’s Ethernet solutions. Our ability to develop a customised, flexible solution to meet CERN’s exact research and collaboration needs was the key factor in this agreement, and we are happy to play our part in facilitating fundamental research and paving the way for future innovations that will benefit the global community on the whole!”
